The Gathering Place
In 2013, the American Cancer Society estimates that 1,660,290 people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States. This number does not include the 12.5 million US people who already live with cancer today. With a ratio like that, it’s likely that each of us knows at least one person who had, has, or will have cancer in their lifetime. That’s why invaluable organizations like The Gathering Place have a special place in our hearts.
The Gathering Place is a Cleveland-area based nonprofit that provides programs and services addressing the social, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of those with cancer and their support network. Opening in January of 2000, The Gathering Place’s mission is to “support, educate, and empower individuals and families touched by cancer through programs and services provided free of charge.” The Gathering Place offers two education centers, support groups, and light exercise and nutrition classes. In order to provide the highest quality of care, all clinical staff are prepared and licensed.
TRUiST’s Director of Product Management, Tom Battle, is particularly close to The Gathering Place. Battle expresses his fondness for this nonprofit, stating, “[The Gathering Place] has provided amazing services to myself and my family over the years during some very difficult times dealing with cancer and loss. Their staff at both locations have been amazing in not only providing comfort during times of grief, but also in providing positivity and opportunities for joy to help focus on things that aren’t as negative. The incredible services that they provide are free and being around those who have struggled with cancer over the years and fought, help me appreciate life more every day.”
In an effort to give back to The Gathering Place, Battle participates and fundraises annually for their Race for the Place 5k. “The 5k race and 1 mile walk provides a very powerful venue to see people who have survived cancer of all types and have been helped by services provided by The Gathering Place,” says Battle. “I am moved each year when I see families and friends who participate to honor the memories of those who they have lost to cancer.”
In the future, Battle hopes to extend his support in other ways at The Gathering Place. He explains, “If you believe in something and it is important to you, no matter what it may be, be passionate about it and invest yourself as much as possible. My father believed that about his family and that is why he was able to fight for so long to be with us through all of our birthdays and major life events. I hope that I am able to extend that passion in what I do in my life as well as in my support of The Gathering Place.”
